Fabric Information

Microfleece/Microchamois

Microfleece/microchamois is a thinner polyester fleece fabric that is used as an inner layer in a diaper to pull (or wick) moisture from baby's skin and deposit it in the soaker.  I use "anti-pill" microfleece and microchamois on my diapers.  The instock diapers use Baum microchamois, and I use both Baum and Malden Mills for custom diapers (subject to availability).

Suedecloth

Suedecloth is a thin polyester fabric that is used as an inner layer in a diaper to pull (or wick) moisture from baby's skin and deposit it in the soaker.  It is very trim and does not stretch.  Some babies are sensitive to suedecloth, so if you are unsure, please let me know!

Polyurethane Laminated Polyester (PUL)

PUL is a polyester fabric that is laminated with a non-breathable, waterproof polyurethane used widely in the cloth diapering industry.  It is laminated by Fabrite, a company specializing in the lamination of various fabrics.  For more information, please go to www.fabrite.com.

Cotton Prints

I try to only use top quality cotton prints that are purchased from quilting stores.  I usually only keep smaller pieces in stock so that I have a wide variety.  I can special order prints for you if given at least one week lead time!  There are two options - you buy the fabric and ship to me and I'll send you the remaining piece of fabric with your diaper (I will deduct $2 from the cost of the diaper), or, I'll buy the fabric (if I think I can use it again) and you pay 1/2 the fabric plus 1/2 the shipping (I keep the fabric) (I'll deduct $2 from the cost of the diaper).  If you have any questions, please ask before ordering!

I pre-wash the prints so that they are pre-shrunk before I sew your diaper together.  If you want the colors to stay the brightest, hang dry your diapers, or wash on warm or cold only.

If you love a cotton print but are worried about the prints wicking, ask me about my 1/2 and 1/2 diapers!  I piece together the print on the bum/wings and polyester minkee on the front of the diaper.  This ensures that the minkee, not the cotton, is in the higher wicking area of the diaper (through the crotch).  This significantly reduces the chances of your diaper wicking!  And since the outer layer is pieced together before the entire diaper is sewn together, the hidden PUL layer remains in one piece.

Minkee

Minkee is a polyester fabric that comes in many nap lengths.  I love this fabric as it washes and dries beautifully and is so soft as an inner or outer (or both) of a diaper!  It does not provide as stay-dry a diaper inner as suedecloth, microfleece or athletic fabric, however it will pull the moisture through to the inner soaker layer effectively.  My children have never had any negative reactions to minkee, and it is my personal favorite as an inner.

I also use minkee on the outside of a diaper as it provides a super soft bum to touch!  In addition, being polyester, won't draw any moisture to the outside of the diaper as much as a cotton fabric would.  And even if it did get a bit wet, it doesn't 'feel' wet, as cotton, or even PUL, does.

I use both Avlyn and Benartex brands of minkee, although I have some minkee of unknown brandage (however it is still great quality!).  For solid colors of my Avlyn minkee, please see www.avlyn.com/collections/index.php.  For tie-dyed colors, please see www.avlyn.com/collections/index.php.  Avlyn minkee is of a very short pile and is very soft and stretchy.  Benartex minkee blankee has a longer pile.  I also have longer pile minkee available for a really furry diaper!

Athletic Wicking Fabric

Athletic fabric is a specially made fabric that pulls moisture from the skin to the other side of the surface.  For more information on one brand of athletic fabric, please visit coolmax.invista.com/faqs.html.  I purchase my wicking fabric from www.wazoodle.com/cgi-bin/catstore.cgi

It can have a tendency to snag when washed with aplix or touchtape, so I include a free zippered net bag (when available) for washing the diapers in.
